Very good talk! Skip to 1:57 to start. The most confusing thing is the OAuth terminology. Note, that "client" is the service itself and not the browser. In his example, the "client" is the back-end server of Yelp and not the website of Yelp that's open in your browser! I wish he had clarified that more in 16:50, because I had to watch the talk twice to finally get it. Another thing that took me some time to realise, which even the speaker didn't mention, is that any login process (including OAuth) always does both authentication and authorization. You can't have one without the other, it makes no sense. Think about it for a minute! But then what is the difference between OAuth and OAuth + OpenID Connect? Pure OAuth is used for authentication and authorization of the "client" to the resource server (i.e. resource server != "client"). OAuth + OpenID Connect is used for authentication and authorization of the user to the "client" (resource server = "client"). So the difference is not authentication vs. authorization, but who is authenticated and authorized to whom.

04:15 OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are becoming the industry best practices for solving these problems 04:31 a lot of confusion about OAuth 2.0 06:40 Back to 2006/07 07:11 common identity use cases from like ten years ago, OAuth flow, diagram 07:36 SSO, SAML, pretty obscure, even more obscure than OAuth 08:25 mobile apps 09:01 delegated authorization 10:17 Yelp, banks haven adopted OAuth yet 13:02 solve the problem with OAuth 15:50 terminology, OAuth 1.0, deprecated, kind of dead 16:25 Resource owner 16:50 Client, the application 17:04 the authorization server, accounts.google.com 17:22 resource server, google contact API, sometimes the authorization server and the resource server are the same thing 17:45 authorization grant, dance back and forth 18:08 callback, the redirect URI 18:29 access token 18:55 client, resource owner 19:08 get redirected over to this authorization server, accounts.google.com 19:20 redirect back, pass redirect URI at the very beginning 19:41 type of authorization grant, the most common, simple example, code grant, authorization code flow, authorization code grant 20:28 access token, can I exchange this code for an access token, authorization code is still good 21:05 go to the resource server, attached access token to the request 21:38 you have an access token but it doesn't mean that you can do just anything 22:04 this basically, this whole flow, this is the whole thing 22:18 scope, very granular, the authorization server has a list of scope that he can understand 23:21 in the client application 24:03 Facebook, post on wall 24:52

This video tells me that "I am not a fool", it was the ecosystem and the people who tried to teach me, that were not hitting the target exactly for various legitimite reasons. Nate is a great teacher and the person who asked some great pointed questions did a good job in letting the teacher get to the questions that cropped up in my head at the time and Nate had an hour to explain all this and this guy certainly knows the subject. On top of that having a good general idea upfront through hours of attempting to completely understand this subject all added up to make this a very very fruitful watch. Thanks Nate.

Hi Nate, Great video. I am able absorb good knowledge. Recently my friend asked about SAML. can we achieve all use cases with OIDC + OAUTH? any special use case for SAML? Does knowledge of OIDC,OAUTH enough to tackle SAML interviews
Nate Barbettini
Nate Barbettini ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
In general, yes. OIDC covers the use cases that SAML is typically used for. But there are a lot of systems that only speak SAML (not OIDC), so you still need to use SAML if you want to need to talk to those systems.

does implicit flow mean that we don't need to register client on authorization server (we don't need client id and secret), because there is no code to token exchange step?
ft light

@Nate Barbettini thanks for your useful answer!
Nate Barbettini
Nate Barbettini ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
A client ID is still used, even though the client secret is not used in the implicit flow. The client ID distinguishes one app from another, because multiple applications may connect to the same authorization server. (Think of how many different apps you may have connected to Google)

Nice talk. one point to add to why hacker cannot make the token exchange call even with the callback url and the auth code is that the endpoint is only accessible for logged in yelp user. If the hacker is managed to logged in as the user he should be able to get the token, I think the presenter skipped on this a bit.
Nate Barbettini
Nate Barbettini ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
Yes, if someone steals your Yelp (or Gmail, etc) password, they can do anything as you. That's why having strong passwords is very important, separate from any OAuth stuff.

why authorization code needs to be sent to the front end in the first place? browser/mobile app doesn't need to know it, all requests sent to google should be initialized from backend
Nate Barbettini
Nate Barbettini ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
Because in a browser-based flow, the "movement" between different pages is done via browser redirects. That means the authorization code must be attached to a browser request first (front channel).
Mirth Magic
Mirth Magic 2 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
I'm still not getting how does the _mobile app authorized_ to do certain things? It does not have any call back URL or does it? All videos I've seen are about _authentication_ of the mobile app using OpenID + PKCE.
Mirth Magic
Mirth Magic ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
@Nate Barbettini There is a Site where a user is redirected for authentication and for authorization of the original site to download user's data. The Site in mind uses callback URL to return to the requesting site. How that may work with the mobile app? I.e., the user clicks the button on the app, goes to the Site, authenticates, clicks "Authorize", and ... how does the Site return the token to the app?
Nate Barbettini
Nate Barbettini ਮਹੀਨੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ
A callback URL is not the same thing as authorization. (Or maybe I've misunderstood your question) It's common to use OIDC + PKCE for mobile authentication, but OAuth + PKCE could be used for mobile authorization too. It depends what you are trying to do.

Facebook Graph API doesn’t provide a server-side JavaScript SDK (like NodeJS). However, it provides client-side JavaScript SDK. One could use this in a webpage and make API calls to get information from Facebook resource servers. It provides access tokens to make API calls.
